High Point, NC — Cyril Jefferson, Democratic candidate for North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, issued the following statement today in response to President Donald J. Trump’s executive orders seizing control of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and deploying federal National Guard troops into the city:
"Let’s be clear: This is not about public safety. This is not about reducing crime.
What President Trump did today is a dangerous and deliberate overreach of executive power. By stripping Washington, D.C.’s elected leadership of authority over their own police force and flooding the streets with National Guard troops under federal command, he has launched a direct assault on the rights of American citizens and the principle of local governance.
This is not leadership. It is an authoritarian power grab—plain and simple.
For generations, Washingtonians have lived without full representation in Congress, and now they’re being denied the right to control their own police force? No president should have the power to override local authority in this way, and certainly not under the false pretense of “restoring order.”
If this can happen in our nation's capital, it can happen in any city in America.
I stand firmly with the residents of Washington, D.C., their Mayor, and every American who believes in the right to self-determination, public accountability, and democratic values. If elected to Congress, I will fight to block this kind of executive overreach and restore local control to the people it belongs to.
This is a moment that demands courage and clarity. We cannot afford to look away. What’s at stake is nothing less than the soul of our democracy."
Cyril Jefferson is Mayor of High Point, a public servant, educator, and candidate for U.S. Congress in North Carolina’s 6th District. A champion for justice, local leadership, and democratic reform, Cyril is running to bring principled leadership to Washington and defend the values that bind us together as a nation.
